Product Description:

This recorded training is designed for attorneys interested in being judges pro tempore or simply for those interested in knowing more about being a judge and the challenges of presiding in the courtroom.

The program focuses on the skills necessary to become an effective judge, including:

  • What is means to be a pro tem judicial officer: an overview of calendaring, technology, pertinent provisions of the Code of Judicial Conduct, and identifying court personnel and their roles.
  • Transition to the bench: from advocate to neutral judicial officer.
  • Working effectively with court personnel: when to ask for assistance and how to stay on time and on track.
  • Technology in the court: understanding the Judicial Access Browser System (JABS).
  • Ethics and conflicts: scenarios and Ethics Opinions are used to demonstrate the application of the Code of Judicial Conduct.
  • Working with court interpreters: the differences between translation and interpretation and the use/misuse of court interpreters.
  • Judicial demeanor and practice bias: the judge's role and demeanor, setting and maintaining courtroom decorum, avoiding practice bias.
The sponsoring organizations are working to support WSBA members in understanding the community of judges and inviting those interested to learn more about becoming a potential resource for the courts. Only attorneys who attend the live presentation of this 1.5-day course have their names added to a list of possible resources for future pro tem appointments. Watching or listening to the recording of this training does not guarantee a pro tem appointment or place you on a list of possible resources for pro tem appointment.
