Product Description:

In this course, discover effective strategies that attorneys can use while working with economically disadvantaged clients to reduce potential barriers to justice. Through discussion of hypothetical clients and cases explore:
  • communication barriers (language, literacy, disability, cultural considerations, technology);
  • isolation barriers (geography, institutionalization, disability, membership in insular communities);
  • knowledge and/or perception barriers (lack of knowledge about legal services, failure to identify problem as a “legal” problem)
By the end of this 90-minute recorded program you will learn:
  • effective attorney-client interaction techniques, with an emphasis on cultural competency and working with persons with mental illnesses; and
  • strategies for connecting economically vulnerable clients with community organizations that can provide them with a variety of services

Benjamin Haslam – Executive Director, Snohomish County Legal Services, Everett, WA
