Developed in partnership with the WSBA Juvenile Law Section

This CLE is designed to examine racism and inequity in our procedures, laws and legal system, unconscious bias, and how racism and inequity impact the distribution of rights and opportunity in society. We will discuss how to recognize racial and social disparities and call out inequity. Good lawyering requires more than transactional advocacy; it requires active efforts to prevent injustice. As the Washington State Supreme Court charged the legal community in their June 4, 2020, letter to the legal community, we must work together to address injustice and eradicate racism.

Agenda:

  1. Understanding the Foundation
    • Defining racial equity and social justice
    • Historical context of inequity in the legal system
    • The ongoing nature of systemic racism
  2. The Role of the Legal Profession
    • Our collective responsibility
    • Independence of the legal profession as a safeguard for justice
    • Recognizing and confronting bias in our work
  3. Frameworks for Change
    • Understanding structural racism and systems of oppression
    • Intersectionality and its importance in legal practice
    • john a. powell's  concepts of "othering and belonging"

  4. Bridging and Targeted Universalism

    • Targeted universalism as a strategy for inclusive change
    • Applications for the legal profession
  5. Action Steps for Legal Professionals

    • Supporting colleagues from marginalized groups
    • Building bridges in your practice
