Since 2016, Washington’s RPC 1.1 has required lawyers to “maintain the requisite knowledge and skill” to provide competent representation by “keeping abreast of changes in the law and its practice, including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology.” But what level of technological proficiency is required to maintain competence under RPC 1.1? What skills must we possess?
While there are no hard-and fast answers, this presentation looks at answers to these questions by courts and legal technology experts in the areas of e-discovery, security, and basic computer literacy. Participants will learn issues they need to be aware of, resources they can turn to, and skills they can put into use in their practice.
