The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) Law Section improves understanding by members of the Washington State Bar Association of the legal needs of LGBT individuals in the state of Washington. The Section supports the efforts of members to achieve the highest standards of competence, professionalism, and ethics in their practices, and assists LGBT residents of Washington state and those who represent them to better understand how their legal needs can be met. The Section promotes the study of LGBT and gender identification law, and reports on laws, decisions, and governmental regulations as they may affect the rights, responsibilities, and needs of LGBT people.

The Section provides benefits to members through research and publications in the field of sexual orientation and gender identification issues. The Section acts as a liaison between the Bar, its Board of Governors, state and national LGBT organizations, and committees of other state bars and other organizations dedicated to serving the needs of LGBT citizens, taking action to raise the visibility of LGBT people, and increasing the knowledge and awareness of legal issues facing the LGBT community. The Section also assists in the efforts and works undertaken with the legislature to enact and improve laws affecting LGBT citizens and to assist the Judiciary in the administration of justice as it pertains to LGBT citizens.

For more information on the many benefits of section membership, see the LGBT Law Section website. For general questions, please e-mail inquiries to sections@wsba.org.
