Moving from Cultural Competence to Cultural Humility: A Lifelong Learning Practice (July 2023)

  • ON-DEMAND SEMINAR

The framework around “cultural humility” was developed in the 1990s by pediatrician Melanie Tervalon, MD, to train doctors and other medical professionals to set aside pre-conceived notions about their patients. While the concept of cultural humility was derived while examining and evaluating patient/practitioner relationships, the principles also apply to client/lawyer relationships. The cultural humility framework expands upon "cultural competency" in that it emphasizes self-reflection and life-long learning as well as addresses biases and power imbalances at both the individual and institutional levels. This panel discussion explores how to engage in this critical practice while working with clients.
