Presented in collaboration with the WSBA Pro Bono and Public Service Committee
Classification as a Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) is a form of federal humanitarian immigration relief available to migrant youth who were abused, neglected, or abandoned by one or both parents as described under state law. To pursue this form of relief at the federal level, a youth must first obtain findings regarding the parental maltreatment and an SIJ order from an appropriate state court. This seminar will explain how to determine eligibility for SIJ classification, review the most common Washington state court proceedings where SIJ findings and orders can be sought, and present best practices on what proposed SIJ findings and orders should include. Finally, it will provide information about how you can volunteer on a youth’s case.
