Ending the Silence on Mental Health is an educational presentation designed to help advocates better understand youth mental health, recognize early warning signs, and respond with care and confidence. Advocates are not expected to diagnose mental health conditions, but rather to become informed observers who know when and how to seek support early. Early intervention, open communication and connection to resources can significantly improve outcomes for young people.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mental health can affect a youth’s learning, relationships, physical health, and emotional well-being.
  • Mental health conditions in youth are common and early support can prevent challenges from becoming more serious.
  • You are not being asked to diagnosis. Instead become a great observer by noticing patterns, intensity, duration and impact of behaviors.
  • Warning signs may look different at home and at school; differences across environments are common.
  • Starting a calm, caring conversation helps young people feel seen and supported - even if you’re unsure what to say.
  • Support can come from schools, healthcare providers, family, community resources, and NAMI programs.
  • Recovery is possible. Advocates play a powerful role simply by showing up, learning and caring.
