Developed in partnership with the WSBA Juvenile Law Section
This CLE explores cultural humility as a framework for juvenile legal practice. Attorneys will examine how culture, bias, and power dynamics shape legal decision-making — from client interviews to courtroom advocacy. Through foundational content presented by Dr. Thompson, Chief Equity and Performance Officer at DES, and practice-focused scenarios led by Daria Spartan, OCLA and JLS CLE & Outreach Coordinator, participants will build concrete skills for culturally responsive representation. This training moves beyond cultural competence as a checklist and toward cultural humility as an ongoing professional practice.
Agenda:
- Cultural Competence vs. Cultural Humility — Framing the Shift
- Foundational Competency for Legal Practice
- Bias Recognition & Legal Decision-Making
- Cross-Cultural Interviewing & Communication
- Working with Interpreters & LEP Clients
- Building Trust & Client Rapport
- Courtroom Dynamics & Cultural Power Analysis
- Culturally Competent Advocacy & Case Strategy
- Commitment to Continued Practice & Q&A
