Courtrooms everywhere are seeing a rise in self-represented persons. In this program, a small panel that includes a courthouse facilitator coordinator, legal aid staff, and a lived experience expert, will share insights into the kinds of populations most likely to represent themselves in courts, the barriers self-represented persons face when navigating court rules and procedures, and the kinds of biases they may encounter from judges and legal professionals. Panelists will then share ways that legal aid programs, court staff, opposing counsel, and concerned WSBA members can help ensure equal access to the courts and equal justice under law for self-represented persons.
