Developed in partnership with the WSBA Labor and Employment Law Section
The rise of the gig economy has transformed how work is structured, especially for immigrant workers who make up a significant portion of the app-based driver workforce. This CLE will explore how grassroots organizing, strategic legal advocacy, and immigrant worker leadership reshaped labor protections in Washington State.
We’ll trace the legal milestones that led to groundbreaking legislation in Seattle—including first-in-the-nation just cause protections for app-based drivers—and examine how these local wins laid the foundation for statewide reforms. Attendees will gain insight into the policy frameworks that made these advances possible, how they differ from approaches in other states, and why robust worker protections are essential to ensuring equity and stability in the gig economy.
This session is especially valuable for attorneys interested in labor and employment law, immigrant justice, and the intersection of legal advocacy and community organizing.
