Developed in partnership with the WSBA Liquor, Cannabis, and Psychedelics Law Section
This CLE will examine the rapidly evolving legal framework surrounding psychedelic substances in Washington State, with a focus on psilocybin and other naturally occurring psychedelics. The program will explore the current legal status under federal and state law, recent legislative developments, and the growing movement toward regulated therapeutic use and decriminalization.
The session will discuss recent Washington legislation and policy initiatives, including proposals to establish a state-regulated psilocybin therapy program that would allow patients with qualifying conditions to access psilocybin in medically supervised settings.
Topics Covered:
- Local decriminalization efforts in Washington cities and counties.
- Clinical research and therapeutic potential, including studies suggesting psilocybin may help treat depression, PTSD, addiction, and other mental health conditions.
- The interaction between federal controlled-substances law and emerging state policies.
- Regulatory, compliance, and issues for attorneys advising clients in healthcare, criminal law, business, and religious-freedom contexts.
Overall, the CLE will provide attorneys with a practical overview of the emerging “psychedelic law” landscape, highlighting how Washington may regulate psychedelic therapies and how lawyers can navigate this evolving area of law.
