Competent legal representation of Tribal clients, and competent legal practice in Tribal Courts, requires attorneys to step beyond their understanding of westernized legal systems and history. In this presentation, attorneys Renee Ambacher and Taylor Herring review recent tribal court ethical opinions, discuss ABA Formal Opinion 500—and the steps lawyers must take to provide competent legal representation to tribal clients, and review tribal custom law jurisprudence to illustrate the necessity of these cultural considerations.
