When attorneys work with clients who require an interpreter or translator in their court proceedings or when there are documents that need translation, it is essential to know what courts expect and to comply with ethics rules relevant to interpreters and translators. This two-part session focuses on effective approaches for working with populations that speak languages other than English where interpreter services are necessary to navigate the legal system.
Part I begins with foundational statutory requirements related to language services in courts as well as the ethics rules for attorneys and interpreters that are relevant for attorneys when they use interpreters or translators for their clients in court proceedings.
In Part II of this session, panelists from a variety of perspectives will share experiences and strategies in serving limited English proficient and Deaf clients; provide tips for working with clients through interpreter services with the aim of facilitating and improving this process for clients, attorneys, and the court. They will share insights and experiences that include best practices, “Do’s and Don’ts,” and solutions aimed at ensuring meaningful communication.
