Parents in family law cases are uncommonly vulnerable to accusations of child abuse. In this presentation, we will look at the guidance an accused parent needs from their family lawyer. We will consider when and how a family lawyer should limit the client’s statements and the client’s participation in evaluations often used in family court. We will explain the roles of CPS, the police, and prosecutors when child abuse is alleged; we will advise how to deal with those public authorities. We’ll also discuss how a family lawyer and a criminal defense lawyer can coordinate their work when the client need help from both.
