In 2021, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory titled, “Protecting Youth Mental Health.” This advisory described a significant increase in youth of persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness and considering, planning or committing suicide. In this presentation, we will examine suicidality, self-harm behaviors, and mental health disorders in children and adolescents. We will review risk factors associated with mental health disorders in youth, as well as potential areas for prevention and/or intervention. We will also address how mental health issues may impact parenting plans.
